An environmental examination for schools students
GREEN Olympiad
An institute, TERI has dedicated itself to the task of creating an informed citizenry, whereby environmental considerations become part of the daily decision-making process. Students enjoy a special status in this effort: it is TERI's hope that they will form an environmentally enlightened leader ship in the year 2047, when India celebrates one hundred years of independence. With this hope and vision TERI launched India's first environmental examination, the GREEN Olympiad, which is designed in an innovative manner so as to test the knowledge of students and also educate and sensitize them in the process. The questions are designed to develop the students’ ability to think critically on crucial environmental issues—acting on TERI’s belief that informed decision-making at every level is necessary to achieve the goal of sustainable development.
The GREEN Olympiad is India’s first national level environment examination for school children held annually in India and abroad. Launched in 1999 on Earth Day (22nd April), this annual initiative focuses attention on environmental concerns and needs of the present and the future. Over the last five years it has proved to be an excellent tool to create awareness amongst children on various environmental issues, reaching out to geographical regions of the country where children get limited opportunities to participate in such an extensive exercise. Children from all parts of India and also from Indian schools abroad participate.
The GREEN Olympiad is an objective-type examination (100 questions) that touches all aspects of environment, natural resources, pollution, and sustainable development. The question paper contains in-depth information on various environmental issues. The answer script comes as a separate sheet. The participants are permitted to take home the question paper thereby spreading the message of environmental problems to a much wider cross section of people.
The GREEN Olympiad culminates in TERRAQUIZ, a multi-episode environment quiz programme for television. The top-performing 32 schools are selected for this national environment quiz. The questions are drawn from topics of daily concern-local and global; attractive audio-visuals impart a unique flavour to this quiz.
The country has been divided into four zones – North, South, East and West. The international schools form the fifth group. The results are compiled zone-wise. The states/regions included in the zones are listed below:North Zone – Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Chandigarh, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, UttaranchalWest Zone – Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, GoaSouth Zone - Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Pondicherry, Andamans, LakshadweepEast Zone - Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Orissa, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal
Seven teams are selected for the TERRAQUIZ from each zone and four from the international group to participate in the television quiz.
The main objectives of the GREEN Olympiad are: To develop a standard analytical tool that assesses a student’s comprehension of issues related to the environment, natural resources, and sustainable development. To generate awareness on issues of critical importance today. To inculcate a better understanding on such issues among the leaders of tomorrow. To facilitate an atmosphere where environment-friendly decisions are encouraged by an informed citizenry and become more acceptable to the general public.
